6 things you should not do in Hong Kong

When visiting a new place, it is better for us to find out what we should or should not do. Here are 6 things that you should not do in Hong Kong which some of them you should better keep in mind.

1. Never stick your chopsticks vertically into a bowl of rice

The reason is actually very simple. A chopsticks stick into a bowl of rice looks like a stick of incense sticking into the burner. Chinese believe the ghosts eat incense, when you stick your chopsticks into the rice, it looks like you are eating incense or giving it to the one sitting opposite to you.

2. Do not smoke in any indoor or sheltered area

No smoking

It is illegal to smoke in any indoor area. Do not attempt to smoke in any restaurant, sheltered bus stop, mall, even at the staircase or toilet. Maximum charge for illegal smoking is HK$1,500.

3. Don’t hit your bowl by chopsticks

Sound of hitting a bowl is lovely but never play it as music instrument in Hong Kong or China. Beggars in the past hit their bowl to ask for rice and food. People will think you are very impolite if you hit your bowl during the meal.

4. Woman should not visit a temple during menstruation period

Temple

The Chinese believed that the Gods do not like blood, they would unhappy to see girls in menstruation period stepping into their house. Another explanation is, some evils may hide near the temple and they like blood. Those evils may harm the girls when they smell their blood.

5. Don’t order 7 dishes in Chinese restaurantChinese dishes

In China, relatives and friends will gather and have a meal together after attending a funeral. They will order a fixed number of dishes for each table and that is 7. So we never order 7 dishes when we have a casual meal or in any other special events. It is because 7 dishes mean you have said goodbye to the dead.

6. Do not eat without holding your bowl

Holding bowl
This is very basic Chinese table manner. One hand holds your chopsticks, another hand holds the bowl. When I was a teenager, my parents would hit my fingers by their chopsticks if I didn’t hold the bowl. Show your politeness, hold your bowl.
